I understand that we all see ourselves as the quintessential professional. You have studied and endured to make it to the top. Just when you think all your hard work and dedication is about to pay off, you experience a feeling of defeat you have never encountered before.

You keep going and you start to feel run down and you can’t get enough sleep. Sunday’s start to bring anxiety and dread overtakes you. You don’t know what to do. You want a career, but now you don’t know if you have what it takes. What happened?

Usually, somewhere along your journey you encountered someone or a situation that has shaken your confidence. You usually don’t recognize this until it has happened. You begin to doubt yourself and your skills. The skills that you spent years cultivating and honing to reach your level of professional status. When this happens, what can you do?

Understand that you are going through a rough patch and it will pass. However, how you come through may lead you in another direction. Be open.

Realize that anyone trying to shake your confidence is someone who sees your potential and feels threatened. They will do anything to keep their place at the top.

Recognize it’s all part of greater plan. Although it is difficult to endure this time, you will come out stronger and confident.

That which tries to tear you down usually bring the opposite effect. You become exactly what they are trying to block you from being. Life is a journey, but just know that during the journey there will be adventure. The adventure usually can only be appreciated when it is over, so gather your Moxie and face it with courage!

Caution: Leadless Leadership Ahead

Have you ever had a 'What the ...?!?' moment at work with those in a leadership role? For example, it just feels like they have no clue. I call that "Leadless Leadership'.

What is Leadless Leadership? Leadership that advances an agenda at their subordinate’s expense.
These leaders don’t understand the current workplace and don’t try to learn more or gain a broader understanding of their position.

My Masters in Organizational Leadership has taught me to always watch the leader. In the past I have watched leaders advance their agenda at the expense of others. They allowed other leaders from different departments to dictate what they should or should not do. At no time did the leader feel empowered to make its own decisions. Instead, they often failed to protect their staff that has performed for them time and time again.

If this resonates with you and this is your reality, here are a few things you can do:
  • Assess whether you are celebrated or tolerated. For too long I stayed with a company that did not appreciate what I had accomplished. Don’t waste time.
  • Realize your current situation and make a conscious decision to remain focused. Understand what is required and do that. Only focus on what you can change.
  • Set a goal. Whether time or project, know when you will move on. Pressure and challenge can take you to the next level. Make sure that once the project is completed or the goal is met, you begin networking for your next endeavor.

Often times, knowing how you will handle a leadless leader make the situation bearable. You don’t have to sit there and take it. Having a strategy is crucial in your professional development. My advice to you is, don’t just exist and not take responsibility for your career. You are in control and empowered. Feel empowered to work your Moxie!

Help My Sweaty Palms

Sweaty palms are a common issue for most people. It can occur during a stressful situation, fearful situations, or sometimes it's just part of a person's everyday life. For those who have to deal with sweaty palms daily, it can be debilitating when having to meet new people. As we know a firm handshake is very important and vital when conveying your Moxie - especially in business.

Here are couple of hacks that can be used to conceal your sweaty palms. These are tried and true that can get you through any social situation. It's better to use these hacks than to continue to be judged by having either a limp handshake or exposing your sweaty palm issue to the masses. Besides your personal business isn't everybody's business.

If you are networking and will shake many hands throughout the evening, do this:

  • Wear something with pockets  -  either a blazer, a skirt or slacks and place a handkerchief in your right pocket. Since you always shake with your right hand, simply place your hand in your pocket and squeeze the handkerchief. By squeezing the handkerchief the perspiration will be absorbed and you can inconspicuously dry your hand throughout the evening.
  • If you are seated in a meeting or a conference, you can still inconspicuously dry your sweaty palms. You can place your handkerchief in your lap and squeeze your handkerchief when necessary.

If you have sweaty palms it would be best to invest in monogrammed or a fashionable set of handkerchiefs just in case they become visible.

We always have to be prepared so our best Moxie can be front and center. If you believed you just had to avoid shaking hands or wipe your hands on your clothes, you now have some game changers in your repertoire.  Do you have any sweaty palms remedies? Please share! Sharing is #SoMoxie
